Modified Tones, a local painting service owned
and operated by Dewey Schaut of St. Marys, is now entering it's third year of business serving Elk, Jefferson, Clearfield,
and Centre counties. Dewey is focussed on more than just interior painting and wood restoration. He specializes
in custom paint finishes known as faux finishes.
The word faux (pronounced foe) is derived from the french
language meaning false. Faux finishes are painted imitations of natural substances such as wood, marble, granite, leather,
parchment, sandstone etc. Many custom paint finishes however are simply finishes of multiple color which, when
applied to a surface add depth, beauty, and richness that cannot be achieved by using solid color. This opens many doors
in the decorating process.
Decorative finishes on walls date back to prehistoric times
revealing man's appreciation for detail, and since the late 1970's there has been a revival of interest in custom paint finishes.
Many modern homes and public interiors can be found decorated with faux finishes and broken color. These finishes add
harmony and create individuality in surroundings allowing homeowners to create custom color schemes by selecting colors from
their artwork, carpet, and furniture and applying these colors to their walls in an unlimited range of colors and patterns.
Graining, the painting of surfaces to resemble woods, dates
back centuries and is very popular in this area now. Rendering wood allows homeowners to have the security of a steel
door with the look of golden oak or red mahogany.
Faux finishes not only add richness to your surroundings,
they also have many practical purposes. For example they may allow small spaces to appear larger, add texture to a flat
surface, or disguise damaged walls. Many times they are necessary for the accurate restoration of older homes. Also,
if the owner grows tired of the painted surface, another finish can be painted directly over the first.
Adding custom faux finishes to your surroundings is a timeless
way to create unique setings. Adding multiple color finishes to a room offers exciting and dramatic ways to redecorate
your home and workplace, and rendering woods, marbles, and other natural substances is as popular now as it has been for centuries.
